I am looking at a property with a composting toilet, gravity spring fed water, and solar electric-- being new to this, what are the key things I need to look for/at when making an offer?  I assume if we get to inspection point, then they will know what to look for but I don’t know what questions to ask to screen the house.  thanks for any help-- amy in alaska, moving to wnc!

Hi Amy,

I’d recommend having a local solar company come out to do an evaluation of the system. Relying on a traditional home inspector may be risky, as solar systems are not that common. I’d also recommend inquiring about heating methods (fireplace, furnace, boiler, water heating, etc), how much fuel is used annually, dehumidification strategies, fresh-air ventilation, foundation type (slab or crawlspace), air filtration systems used, water source/treatment/filtration, and maintenance required on the various systems.

Hope that helps!

you are looking for a good property. however, green living is the prime cause why people prefer to look for such property. in this regard you can take a look around the internet and can grab more details about these properties.

If you want to buy a property, I guess you may consult for a real estate agent to choose what is the better and good property for you.

I agree with HomeEnergyPartners

I think you should have an expert to have a look around as relying on the usual survey may not highlight any problems with the equipment. It can be very difficult for the surveyer to inspect these things if they are not familiar with the systems. Getting an expert to have a look at it will ensure peace of mind and you know you are not buying something which will later cost you.

Good luck!
