Are there any homes out there that are using only rainwater for all of their water needs?

There is a lot of interest in this as wells dry up and water resource become more scarce.

Let us know what you are doing.

I built a second home on a mountain top near Boone about 2 years ago.  We share a well with a neighbor which during normal times is a very low producer (about 1 gal per minute).  Due to the low output rate we installed 2200 gallon cistern which is fed from the well pump.  This storage capacity allows for very slow fill and the ability to meet instantaneous demand.  A submerged pump in the cistern delivers water to a pressure tank in the basement in order to satisfy our normal water demands.

During the recent drought our well went dry and the pump burned out.  Since that happened I have a good neighbor with a functioning well who allows me to haul water from his well and dump into my cistern.  But I need a long term solution which utilizes the already installed storage system.

I am planning to harvest rainwater from my roof (approximately 2000 square feet) by installing gutters and a first flush diverter to eliminate contaminants and dump the roof water into my already installed cistern.  I am aware I will need to purify the water before use.  I believe I will need a particulate filter, a charcoal filter and an ultraviolet light.

I still have not made the decision on what type first flush diverter to install nor have I decided on the filters.

I would appreciate any comments on the above including recommendations on the diverter and filters.
